The Study of Failure
" The willingness to ascribe business failure to personal flaws may explain why it took the nation so long to pass a bankruptcy law that would enable 'losers' to make a new start (Mihm, Stephen. “Capitalism and Its Discontents.” Reviews in American History, vol. 33, no. 3, 2005, pp. 474–480. JSTOR, JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/30031826.)."

"When you retire, you better return TO something. I don't care if it's golf, biking, traveling, or collecting something. But just to retire and vegetate--big mistake. You can die of boredom or a feeling of uselessness. It's the 'use it or lose it' syndrome (Russell, Richard. Dow Theory Letters. September 25, 1996. page 5.)."

"...I bought Berkshire Hathaway at $250 in the late-1960s. I sold it a few years later for $550, proudly doubling my money. Then I watched it go to a high of $9,950. It was a classic case of what I call losing while winning (Russell, Richard. Dow Theory Letters. September 2, 1992. page 5.)."

"Successful investing is a lifelong process. Some years are better than others, and it is a mistake to denominate financial progress into 12-month periods. A lifetime of successful investing requires a lifetime to accomplish (Russell, Richard. Dow Theory Letters. Geraldine Weiss on Investing. January 22, 1992. page 3.)."

"Everybody is wrong on the market at certain times, and that's par for the course. It's OK to be wrong, but the unforgivable act is to STAY wrong (Russell, Richard. Dow Theory Letters. January 8, 1992. page 5.)."

The S&P 500 was down 1.3% for the week. One positive sign was the fact that the market didn't close below 2,700 level. From the technical perspective, a 2,800 level is a crucial one for the upward bias to continue. If the market can break above that level, the all-time high would likely be the next stop. Below are companies that are on our watch list for this week. Continue reading
