It was a choppy week for the week and the market ended slightly higher after reaching all-time high. YTD gain for S&P 500 is at 7.9% with one year return at 29.5%. As the price of gold increases and more talk of inflation permeates into our lives we thought it would be a good time to review a data set going back to 1790 for some insight on where we might be in the cycle of gold and inflation.
On August 24, 2022, we said the following of Occidental Petroleum (OXY):
“Buying oil stocks at this point, especially Occidental Petroleum, is a setup for failure considering all the better alternatives that aren’t at such extremes in the Price Momentum Indicator.”
A look at the price and the Price Momentum Indicator suggests the value of avoiding new positions in OXY at the time.
