It wasn't that long ago that biotech / pharma sector wasn't doing anything. The street hated them and I placed them on my watch list. On October 2, 2009, I highlighted 5 names in that sector, especially CAH. Let's take a look at where they are now.

It sure is too late now but if you see sectors that are under perform it may be a good starting point. There are a lot of utilities companies on the list but they rely heavily on interest rate so I urge you to do extensive research on them prior to purchase.

Something to note, I've taken Shenandoah Telecom (SHEN) out because of an annual dividend payment. I feel that it offer less cushion for myself. I replaced this company with Monsanto (MON) which appear to be on its way to becoming part of the Dividend Achiever. Take a look at this report for more on MON.

The market put on a bull horn and marched passed 10,000 but settled below that mark at the end of the week. The Dow gained 130 points (1.3%) this week.

We're mid way through October and if you recall the same time last year, this marked the beginning of the market freefall. Becton Dickinson (BDX) is still on this list and the price hasn't move much since Buffett announced back in August that he took a stake in the company. It may be worth reconsidering BDX based on the current lack of "action." Art.

Note: Abbott Lab (ABT) is no longer on this list after being on it since this list began in June. I flagged you to ABT on 9/24/09 and the stock has gained 8.5% since.

It was another strong week for the Dow. The market closed higher four days straight and closed Friday down 22 points. At the end of the week, the market gained 165 points and sit at 9,605.41. The market closed this week down 101.64 points (roughly 1%). The big picture is not looking good. My watch list rose from 6 to 12 companies this week. That is more than double. For a second consecutive week, I do not have any company that is within 10% of the yearly low.

Although the market appear to be "topping out", I bought a stock that I sold earlier in the year, Altria Group (MO) at a yield of 7.5%. I placed Altria as my wild card company on the watch list because the company isn't trading near its low but after increasing the dividend by 6% plus a strong fundamental, I had to buy some for my family. If Altria falls to 52 weeks low, it would yield an amazing 9.5% and the company is known to have a ridiculous payout ratio of 90%+. Enough about that, here are the companies on my watch list as of September 4, 2009.

The market showed sign of weakness this week. After the Dow opened at 9,541.63, it managed to gain only 2.57 points ending the week at 9,544.20. My watch list shrank from 7 to 6 companies this week. For the first time, I do not have any company that is within 10% of the yearly low. My advice is to hold or begin taking some profit and wait for a better opportunity. Here are the companies on my watch list as of August 28, 2009.
Note: You may notice that I do not have any financial institutions on my watch list. That is because I feel that the financial sector is weak. There are many regional financial institutions on my list but I omitted them due to risk factor.
